Derry
Doire
Derry wears its history on its sleeve, and sometimes sprays it across a gable wall. It’s the only fully walled city left in Ireland, and those 17th-century ramparts wrap around a place that’s constantly reinventing itself. You’ll find ancient monasteries, cannonball-scarred gates, and the echoes of civil rights marches in its streets. But you’ll also find vinyl shops, vegan cafés, and some of the best live music anywhere on the island.
Whether you know it as Derry or Londonderry, this is a place that surprises. There’s history at every turn, but it doesn’t sit still. It dances, sings, protests, and celebrates. From the Peace Bridge to the Bogside, from St. Columb’s to Derry Girls murals, this county is complex, creative, and completely unignorable.
Derry is best known for its remarkably intact 17th-century city walls, one of the finest walled cities in Europe, still walkable in full circuit above the River Foyle.
HISTORY
Derry
Derry’s story begins in the 6th century, when St. Columba founded a monastery on the River Foyle, a spiritual outpost that helped spread Irish Christianity across Europe.
In the 1600s, English and Scottish settlers arrived as part of the Plantation of Ulster. They built Derry’s famous walls, fortified the city, and changed its cultural landscape. Those walls stood their ground during the 1689 Siege of Derry, one of the most pivotal events in Irish history.
Fast forward to the 20th century, and Derry was at the heart of the Northern Ireland civil rights movement. The city endured dark days during the Troubles, but it also produced writers, artists, and peacebuilders who helped shape a new narrative. Today, Derry is a symbol of what survival, resilience, and reinvention, look like.
LANDSCAPE & TODAY
Derry
Beyond the city, the Roe Valley and Sperrin foothills offer quieter, greener scenery, while the Foyle estuary has long shaped the city’s role as a port and shipbuilding centre.
Derry’s Bogside murals and the Peace Bridge tell the story of a city that has worked hard to reckon with its past, and today it’s recognised as a UK City of Culture alumnus with a growing arts and festival scene.
