Meath
An Mhí
Meath isn’t just part of Ireland’s story, it’s the first few chapters. This is where the ancient high kings ruled, where megalithic tombs predate the pyramids, and where myth and archaeology shake hands on the Hill of Tara. Yet for all its historic weight, Meath remains vibrant, evolving, and full of modern energy.
From the buzzing commuter towns close to Dublin to quiet riverside villages, Meath mixes old world with new ambition. You can wander Newgrange in the morning and catch a tech startup meeting in the afternoon. History isn’t a thing of the past here, it’s the foundation.
Known as the Royal County, Meath was the seat of Ireland’s High Kings, and its gentle Boyne Valley farmland conceals one of the richest concentrations of ancient monuments in Europe.
HISTORY
Meath
Meath’s credentials as the heartland of ancient Ireland are unmatched. The Hill of Tara was the seat of the High Kings for centuries, a symbolic and strategic centre of power. And at Brú na Bóinne, Newgrange and Knowth reveal a Neolithic civilisation that understood the stars, the seasons, and how to make a monument last 5,000 years.
The county played a pivotal role in medieval Ireland too. The Anglo-Normans left their mark with castles like Trim and Slane, and later, the 1690 Battle of the Boyne, fought along Meath’s edge, would ripple through Irish and British history alike.
Modern Meath is more than its landmarks. It’s home to dynamic towns like Navan and Ashbourne, a strong farming tradition, and a population proud of where it comes from, and where it’s going.
LANDSCAPE & TODAY
Meath
The Hill of Tara, ceremonial seat of the High Kings, and the passage tombs of Bru na Boinne, older than the pyramids of Giza, sit within a few miles of each other along the River Boyne.
Modern Meath has grown into a busy commuter county for Dublin, though its racing yards, tillage farms, and heritage sites keep its rural, historic character firmly intact.
