Wexford
Loch Garman
Wexford wears its rebel heart with pride. This is where the 1798 Rising roared into life, where the Vikings dropped anchor, and where the Norman invasion began. But this coastal county isn’t just historical, it’s vibrant, creative, and seriously scenic. From golden beaches and working harbours to opera houses and foodie festivals, Wexford doesn’t rest on its past. It builds on it.
Walk its streets and you’ll hear echoes, of protest songs, church bells, and the chatter of markets older than the Republic. Wexford knows who it is. It’s not trying to be anywhere else.
Wexford’s Norman heritage runs deep, visible in the walled streets of Wexford town and the county’s many Norman-era castles and towers.
HISTORY
Wexford
Wexford has always been a frontline county, geographically and politically. Its Viking port of Loch Garman became one of the earliest urban centres in Ireland. In 1169, the Normans landed at Bannow Bay and changed the course of Irish history forever. Their legacy still stands in the stonework of places like Ferns, Enniscorthy, and Tintern Abbey.
The county’s revolutionary spirit came to a head in 1798. The United Irishmen rose here with force and fire, with major battles fought at Vinegar Hill and New Ross. Though the rebellion failed, Wexford earned its nickname, the “rebel county”, and the scars and songs still remain.
Today, Wexford balances heritage with modern creativity. The Wexford Opera Festival draws global attention, while smaller towns and villages showcase artisan food, music, and crafts that carry a strong local voice. The spirit of rebellion? Still alive. Just better dressed these days.
